Wow! I cannot believe anyone would give this book negative reviews. It was such a GREAT read, I did not want to put it down. It was real, true and I could see facing the battles they did in this book. Yes, it was different than the others so far in this series and the only one I have taken the time to write a review on, because I really think it has been the BEST so far from this series!!! I'm reading the series in order. I think Julia Quinn out did herself in "When He was Wicked". I have loved all the books so far, but this one is very different in a very touching, loving, fabulous way. Do not allow any of the negative reviews keep you from this love affair or you'll miss a great story!! WHEN HE WAS WICKED is the sixth book in the Bridgerton series. It is the story of Michael Stirling and Francesca Bridgerton. When Michael meets Francesca, he immediately falls in love. Unfortunately for him, she is marrying his cousin, the Earl of Kilmartin. When she is tragically widowed, Michael is torn because as he inherits the title, he feels guilty about assuming his beloved cousin's life. His love for Francesca makes him feel even more guilt so he leaves England.
Upon returning four years later, Michael finds that Francesca has come to London to find a husband because she wants a child. The two, of course, end up having a complicated relationship.
This is a beautiful story. The story between Michael and Francesca is so filled with angst as the two deal with guilt because of their love for Francesca's first husband. The two are such honorable people that they struggle through their relationship. Quinn has done a great job of presenting these struggles and the joy of Francesca learning to love again.
I'd rate this book a 4.5.
I liked this book, but I didn't love it. Michael and Francesca get together about 80% into the story, and I really disliked how she handled it. Michael felt used, and she had no thought in her head. When Michael would ask her questions, her response to everything was "I don't know, I don't know." Well, think woman! Use the brain God gave you for a little introspection. I'm not a fan of thoughtless people, not in real life or in books.
The beginning of the book spends quite a bit of time grieving John's death, as it should be. But doesn't make for very happy reading. The middle of the book is the best, with lots of friendship and relationship development between Michael and Francesca. In fact, in the middle of the book I was assuming I'd be rating it five stars, but by the end I felt less enchanted with the story. Even the ending is kind of a downer with a congratulatory but sad letter from John's mother. I doubt I'd read this again.
I listened to the audiobook and Simon Prebble is a good narrator. His pacing is excellent, he has good accents for different classes and in Scotland, and he differentiates characters' voices. Some of his inflections and word emphasis was a bit off to me, but overall a fine performance.
The quality of this work; Francesca's story; is both a bit unconventional in that it involves a young widow seeking a second marriage because she wants to be a mother AND because it will create different reactions and emotions in the reader based on the age and life experience of the particular reader. It rather reminded me of the cemetery scene in Lethal Weapon IV where Mel Gibson is talking to his late wife about Lorna and Leo tells the story of his pet frog. For the younger reader who married relatively young and had a good marriage, there is more of a chance that they will understand and empathize with the heroine's reluctance to risk marriage; any marriage but particularly a marriage with someone connected to her late husband. For the older reader who has experienced a good marriage that either ended suddenly or ended badly and then was fortunate enough to find a mature, experienced man who truly cared for them -the reader may get a bit "miffed" and impatient at her reluctance and wishy-washy mindset.[ For myself I wanted to do a Moonstruck slap and tell her to "snap out of it!" and don't be stupid. Grab Michael with both hands and don't let go; I did and never looked back! ] But keep persevering because it gets REALLY good at the end - with one exception; no epilogue. I don't want to spoil the ending but you'll know how I wish it had concluded.
I read this series a few years back, I started right before book 7 was first published and I'm surprised I haven't reviewed even one of the books yet. I absolutely love this series and recommend these to friends with similar interests. Anyway I decided to reread 'When he was wicked" because I remembered this book being my fave from the bunch ('Romancing Mr Bridgerton" is a close second) and I wasn't disappointed (there has been times when I've re-read a book I love only to ask why I loved it in the first place lol). Even after all these years the book is still amazing. Granted I still remembered the important parts of the book but it was still really nice to revisit and be touched again by Michael and Frannie's story. I love that it didn't come easy and I just fell in love with Michael all over again and so happy that he finally got his HEA. This is an emotional read, at least for me it was. I really fell for these characters and felt their pain, confusion, happiness and everything in between. It absolutely made me want to re-read the series again.
