I loved everything about this novel except for one thing, so I'll start with the one negative element and get that out of the way. For more sensitive readers, it may be helpful to know that this book does include an adulterous affair, and one engaged in not just by a minor character but by main characters. This book is something like what would happen if Madam Bovary met They Came to Baghdad, set in British Raj India. The sexual encounters are mercifully vague, and it turns out that there is actually a significant reason for the adultery, but the affair could have been completely cut out and the plot would be unchanged, so it's a trifle irritating that Cleverly stuck in an affair just to spice up a narrative that didn't in fact need spicing up. Additionally, the affair seems to have no negative consequences whatsoever and as a result seems to be the least realistic part of the book. However, because the plot, setting, pacing, and characters were so engaging, I'm willing to give Cleverly another chance and read at least one more of her books in the hopes that she doesn't make adultery (or worse) a habitual part of her novels. For those who love the ancient Roman SPQR series, or Agatha Christie novels, this work will doubtless be very satisfying. Cleverly does a marvelous job evoking the sights, sounds, and smells of India. Her characters are likable and interesting, her setting is rich and vivid (like the SPQR books, complete with authentic period terms) and her pacing and plot are spot on. The story involves the fascinating premise of the mysterious deaths (always in March) of British officers' wives, all in subtle and seemingly accidental ways. About 3/4 of the way through, the murderer's identity is revealed, and I started to worry that Cleverly would let me down as a reader. After all, one isn't supposed to learn the murderer's identity until the final drawing room confrontation at the very end of the novel! But something about the murderer and his/her crimes was still so shocking and unexpected that the ending was still very rewarding.
What would Keats and Aristotle say? There is great beauty of setting, execution, plot, characters, and pacing in this novel. Other than the moral content weakness, this book is exquisitely entertaining.

I read this when it first came out and loved it, bought it from EBooks and read it again. Joe Sandilands is an intriguing character who reminds me of honor, duty, and other virtues that aren't so readily portrayed in more contemporary books. The exotic setting and the characters within in are well done. I can smell the tropical flowers and feel the sultry climate. The characters are well done and his mystery builds so cleverly I couldn't put it down, even though it was the second time through for me. This is the first in a series set in India. I hope the others come out on , I'll re-read them all. Highly recommended.
THE LAST KASHMIRI ROSE by Beverly Cleverly is the first title in the Joe Sandilands series. (Published in 2001, this was Ms. Cleverly’s first novel.)
My ‘sense of place’ meter was off the charts with this title and the historical period - 1910 Bengal, India, became alive to me.
Joe is an interesting, likeable character - although he may need a bit of ‘fleshing out’ in upcoming titles.
I found the characters interesting, the locale captivating, a sense of British military life in India fascinating (and appalling at the same time) and the mystery intriguing.
This was a hard one to rate because it is a pleasing, but lightweight yarn. If you like the atmosphere of the Raj in the early 20th Century, as I do, you will enjoy the historical references to the outrageously plummy lives they led. There is also some respectful cultural information that connects with today's attitudes toward Colonialism, and some clues to changes that will come.
The protagonist is a heroic, handsome and dashing policeman, Commander Joe Sandilands, sent out from London to do some helpful training among the Indian police agencies in l922. He is called in to help solve the suspiciuos death of the young and beautiful wife of the British officer in charge of an outpost. Her home and body were consumed by fire but the ashes reveal the presence of a second body on the bed with her at the time of death. Moving on from there we find that four other Memsahibs died mysteriously in the same month, March, over a period of 12 years in this same community. There is a romance with a lovely, charming and spunky married woman who boldly attains the romantic attentions of our detective, in spite of her obvious love for her husband. There is lots of great gossip among the British folk, and lots of information to be had from the community of servants and local officials.
The investigation proceeds apace with nice twists, as does the romance, and both end quite satisfactorily. The writing is good and feels like prose taken right out of the Roaring Twenties. Jolly Good!
I am always very happy when I discover a new author whose writing I enjoy, and I have just discovered Barbara Cleverly and her Joe Sandilands series. I was just a short way into The Last Kashmiri Rose when I ordered the second book in the series and I intend to read all of them. For people who love a good mystery surrounded by wonderful descriptions, characters and settings into which we can immerse ourselves, Barbara Cleverly is an author who does her job very well. The mystique surrounding the days of British rule in India comes to life in this series and the cleverness of the plot enhances the reading experience. This book is a great introduction to Joe Sandilands, and now that I'm halfway through the second book in the series I have to say that Barbara Cleverly has found a new fan in me.
