What I LOVED about this book:- The Briarwood Country Club setting and community among the staff,
- Meeting Preston (Press) North and Jane Pringle, a single Mom of a 7 year son. Jane's ex was quite a jerk. Manipulative, abusive, controlling, etc. Kudos to her for the strength to escape him. If not for her son, she might have stayed in that relationship which eroded her self esteem and made her question her judgement. Kudos to Press who was patient and sensitive to Jane's needs.
- Friendships between Jane, Carolyn and Grace.
- Great secondary characters.
Things I did not like (Why it earned only 4 stars.)
- Not believable HOW Press changed his life following his father's death. (I won't explain further because it would include spoilers)
- Jane's living situation was too easily resolved. Her custody battle was too simplistic.
- Preston's nickname, Press. It grated on my nerves. Some books I don't buy because of how much I dislike the names of the main characters.
- In this instance, I substituted "Preston" every time I saw Press written on the page.

The Best of Me A Return to Briarwood Novel edition by Elisabeth Barrett Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I really liked the plot. Jane would do anything to
Protect her son Andy. Even putting him before her with
Own happiness. Keep my interest.
Wonderful characters..Great story line..Loved the story of Press and Jayne..Jane's son is a great character too..Thank you so much for a great book..Waiting for the next book to read, maybe Griggs story and other characters in the book..
The Best of Me is the second book in the Return to Briarwood series. Barrett's writing keeps getting better and better, and her talent for writing realistic and flawed characters are showcased well in this book. Jane is a single mom who is struggling with parenthood, work, and family, while Press, a recovering alcoholic, has some serious struggles of his own. The characters must figure out how to move beyond their pasts and face the future together if only their fears don't get in the way. Needless to say, I loved The Best of Me and can't wait for the next book in the series!
This story of Preston and Jane is well thought out and delves into their backgrounds giving the reader insight to their psyche! This is a continuation of A Return to Briarwood novel and as I enjoyed the first one immensely I could not wait to read the second and it did not disappoint. Whilst they are stand alone novels you will enjoy them that much more if you read them in order. Not as predictable as I first thought and am glad I did not allow some of the reviews to douse my enthusiasm. A solid 4.5 Stars worth every minute I spent reading it! Try it for yourself ........
I've read a few of Ms. Barrett's novels from back in the day, and now this more up-dated one. Her writing still feels swamped in heaviness, like it was stuck in the old Harlequin style. I kept having to remind myself the setting was current.
Jane was struggling, and portrayed realistically while I felt Press swap too good to be true. But it is a romance novel, so I suspended my disbelief and read on.
It was leaden, tedious and, at times, stilted. Too much mundane, too much shmaltz.
There were, however, no grammatical errors or electronic glitches, so I want jarred out of the story at all. I just wished it had ended sooner than it had.
I hate giving books negative reviews. Typically I simply don't review a book if I don't take like it, but this book is one of the exceptions. Luckily I didn't t pay for this book; I was able to receive it for free, because then I would have been truly incensed that it made it into print.
The plot is over-used. It is truly a shame that more of the Jane's in real life can't find kind, thoughtful, young, rich recovering alcoholics that need to be needed by formerly abused young mothers, whose abusive ex-partners just won't go away. Heavy sigh. I skip read most of the book, only to a trite and unsatisfying ending, with many plot threads left hanging. For me, there is not much here to recommend, which is a shame because I have liked books by this author.
The Best of Me, the second book in A Return to Briarwood series, is as warm and enchanting as Once and Again. I really expected Marcus's story to be the next book, but I was delighted to spend my time with Jane and Press. Jane ex is till being a real pain and trying to get custody of Andy; Jane's greatest fear. She is not sure that she is ready to trust a new relationship, and she is worried that Dan will find a way to make any new man in her life as an excuse to take Andy away. On the other hand, Press is awesome to her and to Andy and she is so drawn to him.
Life is tough and past pains influence how we face the present; Elisabeth Barrett does and outstanding job of presenting that picture and making us understand the trouble that influence can create for people as well as the strength that it can bring. The romance is lovely and Jane's friends are great and provide wonderful support.
This novel works well as a standalone.
