I don’t usually write reviews for books I got for free ... but this is another one of those books where I was glad that I checked out a free list and was able to try it out. After I read it I quickly bought the collection of short stories, the second and third books.
I was really impressed that even though she incorporated pretty much any/all possible creatures in a UF setting was able to craft a world that seemed refreshingly new and interesting. I particularly liked how there were different habitats/prisons for different religions. The use of magic was really intriguing and I thought the use of silver brands in a person’s forehead to denote what “species” they were was pretty unique.
I normally loathe love triangles and well ... saw this one coming. But, I kept reading because the rest of the actual story had me riveted ... as in before I got
50%into the book I stopped to buy the rest of the series kind of riveted. Each of the two love interests have their pros and cons, but MeShack’s being a man-whore kinda soured him for me at the start. Zulu, well, he’s basically blood thirsty and determined ... can’t think of anything else right now!
Either way it didn’t seem important, at least important enough to over shadow the real story. That little mini battle was incorporated seemlessly into the main plot. I was kept guessing as to who the serial killer was throughout a good portion of the book. I would have never picked who had actually been the murderer. Once everything was explained and laid out it made sense.
All in all this was a great read that I would highly recommend to someone who is looking for something different from the usual fair that is out there in the same category.

Fire Baptized Kenya Wright 9780985023003 Books Reviews

Ms. Wright has created interesting characters in a new and different world that begs to be explored.

Well crafted story, flows nicely without the huge information dumps that usually occur when there is a complex society introduced. While other writers can spend pages setting up a history and background, Ms. Wright has bound it into the story as part of the narrative. This creates a nice pull and has a more natural feel than many other writers in this genre.

If you have to have every detail of the scenery, every feeling of a character spelled out for you in a story, this one isn't it. The action doesn't stop every paragraph to examine the character's feelings. There is no endless diatribe from chapter one about her loneliness, her attraction to THE guy, her pain, more attraction to THE guy. In this story things actually move quickly when there is action, and you feel like you're running to keep up.

This isn't the traditional fantasy character with no idea that she is ravishingly beautiful, though she is very smart - How the heck does THAT work? Small children scream and run - not a good sign. Men tend to look at you, probably a good sign. Your girlfriends are jealous, yup - you know why, if you have a brain. NOT rocket science.

Lanore is strong but she also freaks out when confronted with overwhelming circumstances.
This character has flaws, and so do the people she's around. Her world is a seedy, rough place with challenges that you can't just cut down with a sword. I liked her because she sets boundaries - she says no to sex with the enormously sexy guy when he's been a jerk, even though she's tempted.

The nicest part is how Wright weaves beauty and strength into this same world so that it doesn't get too gritty. Pixies instead of cats for house pets? Gotta love that.

Looking forward to seeing more from this author.
Fire Baptized has been on my TBR pile for a long while. To be honest, it was the cover that caught my eye and then to my delighted shock it has an AA female lead. Let's just be real and say that PNR is probably right after historical romance when we talk about the desert of diversity that is present in commercial fiction. Alright...stepping off my soapbox...

Fire Baptized by Kenya Wright is a story that follows Lanore Vesta, a mixed supernatural who is basically trying to fight against apartheid for mixed supernaturals (and more broader - supes in general since they too are oppressed by humans). In this world, supes basically live in designated areas (reservations anyone?) from which they aren't allowed to leave unless they want to come under some heavy artillery from the American government. So this also has a dystopian feel to it. Within these reservations a system is in place where pure blood supernaturals are the dominant society and mixed breeds (supes of two different supe heritages) are at the bottom of the food chain. So one oppressed culture decides to oppress another to make themselves feel good even though ultimately they are all oppressed because they are all stuck in the Habitat. Dang that's sounds historical...see the founding of the United States for context! Damn that soapbox...

I liked Lanore. She is smart, witty, and about her business. She is also tangled up in a love affair that had me jumping sides left and right. I don't know if I'm team Meshack or Zulu. Speaking of our males leads...Meshack is Lanore's former man (who's also a med student/musician - smarts and arts) and Zulu is trying to be her current one (leader of the resistance movement to see the day when equality is given to "mixies" - BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY). Both Lanore and I are very confused about who we want to be with lol. I mean I think she figures it out in the end but I still feel torn.

The plot of the book centers around Lanore witnessing the murder of a mixie in an alley on the way home. Well unbeknownst to her, the killer sees her as well. So now it's a cat and mouse game around who will find who first.

There are some heavy themes in this book if you look beyond the surface race, class, oppression, discrimination, etc. Or you could look at it as another UF. I challenge you to look beyond what lies on the surface and them look around you especially here in the US and see the fruits of the labors mentioned in this book. I'm ready to read more about Santeria Habitat, Lanore, Zulu, and maybe I'll be a groupie for Meshack ;P
