I love Rachel Hawthorne. I read this book in my teens, and I still enjoy the story into my mid-twenties. It's a fun and easy read - I recommend any of her books for beach reads or plane rides.

Island Girls and Boys Rachel Hawthorne Books Reviews

Island Girls and Boys is about this group of friends Jen, Amy, and Chelsea. Jen plan for the perfect summer vacation before going to college. The girls live on a island by the border of Texas, in Jen's grandparents' house. On the island, they meet unexpected challenges, like how it is to live with each other. Then Chelsea brings her boyfriend, Noah without asking Jen and Amy. However, Jen, the main character who tells us the story, finds herself a "boyfriend", Dylan. They weren't supposed to get attached to each other, but then end up caring for each other more than they thought. Amy, lacking the care and attention from her friends, brings home strays, as in animals and boys. By the end of the story, the 3 girls end up really well in their relationship. The story does end well, but I think Rachel Hawthorne did a lot better in her other book, Caribbean Cruising. The chaacters in this book are not fully dev. She could've made a much better job about Dylan. We don't get as much as in-depth characters. The ending, in my opinion is a bit sad, but we can only infer what happens then. To those who read Caribbean Cruising might like this one as much. It is nevertheless a good book. Some parts were hilarious. They were laugh out loud moments. I recommand this book for people who are looking for a fun summer read, not a deep, romantic one.
In high school my best friends and I used to spend the time in the morning, before the first bell rang, sifting through the fiction section in the school library. We had almost every book on the shelf memorized by the time we graduated. This book was one of our favorite "treasures" from that time. One of us checked it out, read it, and forced the other two to read it. It was the epitome of everything we had ever day-dreamed about in our adolescent lives. Cute boys, freedom, the beach, cute boys... To this day, as an adult, I still love this book and reread it. The three of us can still talk about the events in the book like they were part of our actual lives (because we used to wish *so badly* that they would happen to us).

This is the type of "romance" novel that I like. It's breezy, cute, romantic, but not sexual like the classic adult romance novel. Easily read on a vacation weekend, this book (along with Hawthorne's others) will make you smile with delight.
Island Girls (And Boys) by Rachel Hawthorne is one of the used books that I picked up at the Franklin & Marshall used book sale. To see more of my book haul click here!

1. Island Girls (And Boys) is the story of 3 friends (Jen, Amy, and Chelsea) who recently graduated from high school. They go to and island to live in Jen's grandparents beach house for the summer while they work at a coastal campground. They learn that living with your best friends isn't all it's cracked up to be. Some of them even find love!

2. I've read a lot of Rachel Hawthorne books and they're basically just light teen romances. However, that's not to say they aren't filled with hard-hitting drama. Because they are! While there's the obvious theme of summer romance, the girls must also learn how to grow up before college and get used to living on their own, without their parents to help them.

3. Speaking of hitting, I'm surprise that Jen didn't wind up slapping her friend Chelsea halfway through the book. That girl got on my nerves. haha If I had to rank the main characters I would say that Amy was my favorite, Jen was my second favorite, and Chelsea could be eaten by a shark for all I cared.

4. I think Amy was my favorite character because of her quirks. She likes to take in stray animals (and stray guys) because she has a big heart and hates to see other people suffering. I thought that was a funny character flaw (or perk?) and wish that the other girls had paid more attention to her during the course of the book.

5. I liked reading about their summer jobs and about life on the campground. My full time job is in the hospitality profession and I related to some of the goofy customers that Jen had to deal with. haha

All in all this is a fun summer read and I recommend it if you're looking for something summer-y. I spent quite a bit of time reading it while I was tanning in my backyard.

Take care,
Marian
I enjoy this author very much and I was thrilled when this book came before its scheduled arrival date. Even if you are no longer in the "Young Adult" section of books, you will still enjoy it.
I loved the main characters and the story altogether. It's different, but also good for teens. It gets more interesting as you go.
I read this book every summer and every time I laugh, I cry, and I feel for the characters. Hawthorne did an amazing job of putting you in the shoes of a senior about to go off to college!
Very happy. Delivered before expected
